What To Pack In Your Hospital Bag: A Mum’s Complete Checklist

One of the biggest milestones during pregnancy is packing your hospital bag. For many mums, it’s the moment everything starts to feel very real. Suddenly, you’re not just imagining your baby anymore — you’re preparing to actually meet them.

When I was pregnant, I spent far too much time watching hospital bag videos and reading endless checklists online. Some people packed half their house, while others seemed to survive with a toothbrush and a spare babygrow.

The truth is that every birth is different, but there are a few essentials you’ll be grateful to have with you. Whether you’re a first-time mum or preparing for another baby, here’s everything I’d recommend packing in your hospital bag.

Important Documentation

Before anything else, make sure you have any important paperwork ready to go.

This may include:

  • Your maternity notes
  • Birth plan (if you have one)
  • Hospital appointment letters
  • Photo identification if required
  • Any important medical information

Comfortable Clothing

Labour and recovery aren’t fashion shows. Pack comfortable clothing that you don’t mind getting messy.

I would recommend:

  • Loose nightdresses or oversized top
  • A lightweight dressing gown
  • Comfortable underwear
  • Maternity bras or nursing bras
  • Going-home outfit
  • Socks

Toiletries

If you are staying for longer, a shower after labour can feel like one of the greatest experiences of your life.

Pack:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Hairbrush
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Body wash
  • Deodorant
  • Lip balm
  • Hair ties
  • Face wipes
  • Moisturiser

Lip balm deserves a special mention because hospital air seems determined to turn your lips into sandpaper.

Postpartum Essentials

These are the items many first-time mums don’t realise they’ll need.

Consider packing:

  • Maternity pads
  • Disposable underwear or comfortable large underwear
  • Peri bottle if you have one
  • Breast pads
  • Nipple cream if planning to breastfeed

Your body has just done something incredible, so don’t forget to look after yourself too.

Snacks & Drinks

Hospital food doesn’t always arrive exactly when you’re hungry. I packed myself a LOT of Jammy Dodgers. Best decision ever, by the way.

Good options include:

  • Cereal bars
  • Chocolate / Sweets
  • Crackers
  • Fruits
  • Isotonic drinks
  • Water bottle with a straw

Trust me on this one.

Baby Clothing

Babies have a talent for being sick on the one outfit you thought would last all day.

Pack:

  • 5–6 babygrows
  • Vests
  • Hat
  • Mittens if desired
  • Socks
  • Going-home outfit

It’s always better to have one outfit too many than one too few.

Nappies & Wipes

Most hospitals expect parents to provide their own.

Blankets

Newborn babies can struggle to regulate their temperature. A couple of soft blankets can be useful for cuddles, feeds and the journey home.

Final Thoughts

Packing your hospital bag can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first baby. The good news is that there are very few things that are truly essential. And remember, if you forget something, it’s not the end of the world. Hospitals see new parents every day, and most forgotten items can be brought in later.

Oh, also, please don’t forget phone chargers…just saying.
